# Collecting Responses

Once you've designed your study, you're ready to start getting people to respond. Let's walk through that process on SoundingBox.

When you collect your responses, people matching your screening profile complete your study tasks and tell you what they think.

Collecting responses in action
Using our apps for iOS or Android, people complete task activities that you specify and tell you what they think. On desktop, participants only need their browser, requiring no download, extension or plugin.

# Enable Data Collection: Publishing

To enable data collection on a study you've been working on, go to the last step in the study-create process, review what you have done, and press the Publlish Study button. Publishing your study will move it out of its draft state, and make it possible for the study to receive responses.

# Try It as a Participant

Before your study goes out to real participants, it's always a good idea to preview it yourself to see if everything works as expected. To do this, go to Manage and Launch, and then click on Preview for your study. This will allow you to step through it as a participant would.

In addition to previewing it as participant, you can also generate a share URL to send do your colleagues to try things out. To generate a share URL go to Manage and Launch, and click on Share in the dropdown next to your study.

  • The first URL (the Study URL) is the URL you would give to participants if you want to take over the responsibility of finding your own participants.
  • The Preview URL is the URL you and your colleagues can use to try out the study.

Use the Preview URL you're testing internally because it disables certain checks that our system makes to discourage study repeaters.

Screening questions behave as they would normally when you visit the study with the Preview URL.

# Editing after Publishing

If you choose to edit after initializing, note that editing will remove any data you've collected since editing will change the design of the study. Once your study launches, editing is disabled, so make sure you have everything right before you go to the next step. If you don't want to lose data that you've collected, clone the study instead of editing it.

# Launching

To launch your study to participants, press the Launch button in Manage and Launch. Launching will send your study out to participants (if you're using the SoundingBox panel) and begin data collection. This is also where you'll be asked to pay for your study if you're on Pro plan.

You can monitor progress from the Manage and Launch page.

# Using Your Own Participants

SoundingBox has a massive built-in pool of participants that you can tap to provide feedback, but you're not obligated to use it. If you want to take on the responsibility for getting participants, we're happy to support you. Every study has a public URL that you can distribute to whomever you like, whenever you want. You can use this URL while developing your study, getting feedback from colleagues. You can also distribute this URL to your own list of participants.

To get your study's URL, click on the Share from on the Manage and Launch page, and choose either the Study URL or Preview URL, depending on your needs. See above for more information on the difference between the two URLs.
